The SAIL Program
Celebrating 33 Years of Excellence at CSUSB!

The Student Assistance in Learning (SAIL) program is a TRiO Student Support Services grant, which has served nearly 5,000 students at Cal State San Bernardino since 1981. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the federal TRiO programs began with passage of the Educational Opportunity Act of 1964. They include outreach programs designed to assist low-income, first-generation and students with disabilities as they proceed through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. The specific goal of Student Support Services programs like SAIL is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of targeted students at the undergraduate level through academic support and advising services.

Facts & Figures: SAIL Students Excel!

Students who choose to join SAIL are proactive! They seek every possible opportunity to enhance their success, and their effort and commitment are reflected in their achievement:
  • SAILís persistence rate (fall 2012 to fall 2013) was 95%.
  • 46.2% of SAILís active students qualified for SAIL's Spring Quarter 2014 Honor Roll by having earned a quarter GPA of 3.0 or higher. (Nineteen had a 4.0 GPA.) 43.4% of the students had achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above for all coursework undertaken in college, and the average cumulative GPA for all SAIL participants at the end of spring quarter 2014 was 2.919.
  • In 2013-14, 75.3% of SAIL students who enrolled in the program's adjunct support classes (supplemental instruction) received a grade of "C" or better in the general education content courses for which adjunct classes were offered.
  • SAIL's average six-year graduation rate for first-time freshmen (2000-01 through 2007-08 cohorts) is 53.3%, exceeding that for the campus as a whole.

Each year, SAIL achievers are honored at the program's Student Recognition Reception held in May. The SAIL staff is proud to showcase their many accomplishments!
