The SAIL Program
Celebrating 34 Years of Excellence at CSUSB!
The Student Assistance in Learning (SAIL) program is a TRiO Student Support Services grant, which has served nearly 5,000 students at Cal State San Bernardino since 1981. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the federal TRiO programs began with passage of the Educational Opportunity Act of 1964. They include outreach programs designed to assist low-income, first-generation and students with disabilities as they proceed through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. The specific goal of Student Support Services programs like SAIL is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of targeted students at the undergraduate level through academic support and advising services.
Facts & Figures: SAIL Students Excel!
Students who choose to join SAIL are proactive! They seek every possible opportunity to enhance their success, and their effort and commitment are reflected in their achievement:
- SAILís persistence rate (fall 2013 to fall 2014) was 93%.
- 54.3% of SAILís active students qualified for the programís Spring Quarter 2015 Honor Roll by having earned a quarter grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. (Eleven students had a GPA of 4.0.)
- At the end of Spring Quarter 2015, 50% of SAILís participants had achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above for all coursework undertaken in college, and the average cumulative GPA was 2.994.
- SAIL's average six-year graduation rate for first-time freshmen (2000-01 through 2008-09 cohorts) is 53.8%, exceeding that for the campus as a whole.
Each year, SAIL achievers are honored at the program's Student Recognition Reception held in May. The SAIL staff is proud to showcase their many accomplishments!
SAILís open enrollment period for eligible new students occurs annually in the month of September and closes when the program reaches 350 new and continuing participants. After that time, eligible students are admitted through referrals from departments or faculty on a space-available basis only. Interested students are asked to submit an online SAIL Pre-Application Form available on SAILís web site. Eligible students will then be contacted by the SAIL office in 5 Ė 10 business days, invited to complete the necessary intake documents and scheduled for a mandatory orientation.
